Friend of Santos
This is a second addition to the collection of “Written for the Workshop” with the prompt to rewrite a song.
The first song I heard after the prompt was Friend of the Devil by the Grateful Dead and I knew it would be the one to work with. The result is below. I hope you enjoy it.
Friend of Santos
I lit out from DC, I was trailed by nine interns.
Didn’t get to sleep last night, and my eyes man, they still burn.
Set out runnin’ but I take my time,
A friend of Santos is a friend of mine.
If I get home before the press, I just might get some sleep, I guess.
Ran into George Santos and he gave me a cell phone.
I spent the night on YouTube ‘cause I was chillin’ alone.
Set out runnin’ but I take my time, a friend of Santos is a friend of mine.
If I get home before the press, I just might get some sleep, I guess.
I ran down to the deposition but Santos caught me there.
He took my pre-paid cell phone and he vanished in the air.
Set out runnin’ but I take my time,
A friend of Santos is a friend of mine.
If I get home before the press, I just might get some sleep, I guess.
Got two reasons why I laugh aloud each lonely night,
The first one’s named Stephen Colbert, and he’s my heart’s delight.
The second one is Jimmy, babe, and I ain’t sain’ which one,
And if it catches up with me, at least I had some fun.
Got a wife in Seattle and one in Chinatown.
The first one says she’s got my child, so I might stick around.
Set out runnin’ but I take my time,
A friend of Santos is a friend of mine.
If I get home before the press, I just might get some sleep, I guess.
